How to improve Garden soil

 

Thinking about starting gardening ? First thing you have to know  what type of your garden soil is?Is it fertile enough to flourish the healthy plants?

There are different types of soil and each type has different features that might suitable for plants or not. So by knowing the type of garden soil once can choose the plants according to it or we can improve the soil quality by different practices that can help plants to flourish.

 Soil Can Cause Problem

1-Salty soil

  If you watered the soil and see the white crust over its surface after some time, its mean your soil contain lots of free salts. These salts effect the water absorption of plants and also its growth.

Normal plants face difficulty to grow in such a soil.

 

 

2-Clay Soil

Clay soil is hard when dry and sticky when wet. Roots feel difficult to penetrate it. It also absorb the water slowly.

 

3-Amorphous soil/eroded soil

If your home is near the busy road.Even the fertile soil turns barrens due to erosion caused by heavy traffic.

 

4-Sandy soil

If the soil have high proportion of sand it can not hold the water for long plants that require less water or have deep roots are best for such a soil. 

Easy way to Know it

Easy way to find out the type of your soil garden  dig a hole 6  and 10 inches deep. Fill it with water and let it drain. Refill the hole with water, and note the time it takes to drain. If it drains in 3 hours it is sandy soil while 4-6 hours then it is good soil. If the water doesn’t drained completely even after  8 hours then it is  clay soil.

 

Reclamation/Solution

 

Although every kind of soil more or less productive. We can improve poor productive soil by little effort.

Two main method of to Improve every kind of non productive soil is

1-Add composite

2-Plant the Plants according to soil type

 

1-Add composite

Most recommended solution of every poor productive soil is adding decomposed organic material in soil. There are different methods of adding composite in soil.

Ø Most frequently used organic matter is animal manure. Animal manure is very easy and convenient way to add organic matter in soil as it is already decomposed therefore take less time to be the part of soil. For this animal manure is spread over soil and plough to mixed it with soil.

Ø You can also add the grinned egg shells.

Ø Dead worms,or other animal parts

Kitchen Remaining

For this all organic remains in your kitchen could be use to make composite.

 Dig hole in one side of your home and add all organic remaining from your kitchen and cover it with soil. After few days it will decay and you mix it with your garden soil.

If you grand your organic remaining in blender, process of decaying will be more quick.So you can keep separate blender to blend your organic remaining from your kitchen.

Husks of wheat,rice or dried grass is spread over the soil that retain the moisture.

2-Plants according to soil type

a. Salt Resistant Plants

There are lot of plants that are salt resistant depend upon area you live.

l Usually thick leaves with succulents stem like cactus can tolerate the drought and high salt contents in soil.

b.Plants for Clay Soil

Plants those have hard and deep roots are best to grow in clay soil.

l It is best to grow seasonal plants that grow quick and die to add composite in soil.

l Plants with thick and hard roots are more likely to grow in such a soil. Like Roses, Day Lilly, Fuchsia, Sunflower

C. Plants for Road side/Chilled soil

If your home is near the busy road.Even the fertile soil turns barrens due to erosion caused by heavy traffic.

l Only solution is to cover the area by grass and keep adding manure. Manure hold the soil particle and prevent them from erosion.

l You can grow the plants that can withstand the wind.Have strong stem.

l Palms are best for this. While watering roadside plants also wash leaves to remove the dust.
